Food Trucks Approaching New Record in Tampa

More than 60 Florida food trucks are trying to set a new Guinness World Record

Sixty-two vendors have come together in Tampa to attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest food truck gathering, the Tampa Tribune is reporting.

The rally will be taking place August 31st at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa, Florida and is close to breaking the previous record of 64 trucks that was set in April at the Magic City Casino in Miami.

Though they are close to breaking this record with 62 participants, the ultimate goal is to reach 100 trucks. Behind the event is Jeremy Gomez of the Generation Food Truck, Michael Lynch of, and Tampa blogger of Carlos Hernandez of, who have been contacting live musical acts as well as food trucks from across America to participate in the event.

The venture has spurred some competition between Tampa and Miami, where promoters threatening to cut off vendors if they participate in the Tampa rally. However, trucks from South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee have all applied to participate.

1. Who regulates food operations?

Food Safety in Florida is regulated by multiple agencies. The main three are: the Department of Health, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, and the Department of Business and Professional Regulation. Additionally, the following agencies regulate food services for some of their licensed facilites: Department of Children and Families (child care facilities, child caring agencies, etc.), Agency for Health Care Administration (hospitals and nursing homes), Agency for Persons with Disabilities (group homes that support and provide services for persons with disabilities).

(i) Generally, the Department of Health regulates food service establishments located in institutional settings (such as schools, assisted living facilities, adult day cares, and detention facilities), civic and fraternal organizations, bars and lounges that don't prepare foods, and theaters that limit their food service to items customarily served at theaters (such as beverages, popcorn, hotdogs, and nachos).  For info, contact one of our l ocal health departments or call (850) 245-4277.

(ii) The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services generally regulates whole-sale food operations, convenience stores, grocery stores, food processing operations, food storage/warehouse operation and non-alcoholic beverage operations (such as juice or smoothie bars and coffee houses). (iii) The Department of Business and Professional Regulation regulates restaurants, most mobile food vehicles, caterers, and most public food service events. You can reach their Customer Contact Center by calling (850) 487-1395 or you can file a complaint online.

Detroit could break world record for most food trucks at upcoming festival

A mob of food trucks will descend on Detroit this month for what is shaping up to be a Guinness World Record-breaking event.

More than 120 food trucks from Detroit and beyond are expected at River Days, which takes place June 21-23 at West Riverfront Park, thanks to the festival’s partnership with the World’s Largest Food Truck Rally.

The Detroit Riverfront Conservancy-hosted event, which runs from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. each day, is expected to draw a crowd of thousands to feast on everything from barbecue and burgers to empanadas and ice cream.

The trucks will arrive from places across the country, including Florida, Kentucky, Indiana and Ohio.

The number of food trucks, which is subject to change, will rival the Guinness World Record of 120 food trucks, which gathered in March 2014 at the Florida State Fairgrounds in Tampa during a two-day food truck rally.

River Days also features four stages of live music, a zip line, games and other entertainment. It's the first year in its new location, moving from the River Walk.

'The World's Largest Food Truck Rally' is coming to Clearwater in November

THE WORLD'S LARGEST FOOD TRUCK RALLY/ FACEBOOK Back in 2014 Generation Food Truck was awarded the World Record for Largest Parade of Food Trucks in 2014 by the Guinness World Records.

Every food truck rally since has been bigger and better. In just a few months, Coachman Park will host 'The World's Largest Food Truck Rally' of over 200 trucks hailing from all over the country.

It has been five years since the owners of GFT have been back in their hometown of Tampa Bay and they're returning the right way, by making it the biggest rally they've ever curated.

Owners of GFT, Jeremy and Candy Gomez are shooting for 209 trucks to break their personal best record, and Guinness World Records will be on-site to ensure they get it in the books. Saturday, November 30 and Sunday, December 1, the rally will be serving up cuisines from sweet to savory to wrapped in bacon and deep-fried.

Some trucks on the list include Karma Kitchen from Indiana, Cheesecake Guy from New York, Georgia's Rolling Thai and even some local trucks like Hott Mess and Kombucha Tampa. There is guaranteed to be cuisine for any and every diet and craving.

Thankfully, there will be two full days of the rally to chow down and sample a little of everything. With so many options you may be able to avoid lines, or camp out to grab grub that you just can't miss before they roll off back to their home state.

This event is family-friendly, will host live music and a performance by DJ Jake De La Cruz.

There will also be live professional wrestling from Generation Championship Wrestling, so dinner and a show.

You can also snag some adult beverages and stick around for games to burn off a few calories before heading to the next truck.

Beyond the requirements, common sense, good practices and reducing liability suggests you should do the following.


Testing of pH

​It's best to use a pH meter, properly calibrated on the day used. I use this one, which is reliable and inexpensive. And this pH meter is really good, but isn't always available.
Short-range paper pH test strips, commonly known as litmus paper, may be used instead, if the product normally has a pH of 4.0 or lower and the paper's range includes a pH of 4.6.

Record-keeping is suggested

Keep a written record of every batch of product made for sale, including:

  • ​Recipe, including procedures and ingredients
  • Amount canned and sold
  • Canning date
  • Sale dates and locations
  • Gross sales receipts
  • Results of any pH test


Although inspections are not required, you should consider doing the following:

  • ​Use clean equipment that has been effectively sanitized prior to use
  • Clean work surfaces and then sanitize with bleach water before and after use
  • Keep ingredients separate from other unprocessed foods
  • Keep household pets out of the work area
  • Keep walls and floors clean
  • Have adequate lighting
  • Keep window and door screens in good repair to keep insects out
  • Wash hands frequently while working
  • Consider annual testing of water if using a private well

  • Allergens: Most state home baking acts require an "ingredient statement" and/or an "allergen listing" on the label of the bakery item for sale but if your state does not, you should anyway. The eight major food allergens are
    • milk,
    • eggs,
    • fish,
    • crustacean shellfish,
    • tree nuts,
    • peanuts,
    • wheat and
    • soybean.
    • If a potentially hazardous food has been out of temperature control for 2 hours or less, then it may continue to be used or be placed back in the refrigerator.
    • If a potentially hazardous food has been out of temperature control for more than 2 hours but less than 4 hours, it needs to be used quickly or discarded.
    • If a potentially hazardous food has been out of temperature control for more than 4 hours, it must be discarded.

    By the summer of 2009, the number of vehicles was hovering around ten.

    Both are still around today.

    Unfortunately, at the moment, there are very few recurring Miami-Dade County events.
